Fair dinkum huh?

02/12/2013

.
At the last election campaign, Tony Abbott asked the Australian people to consider who was more ‘fair dinkum’. That you can ‘trust’ him. Really Tony? The man who once said that the saying ‘No new taxes’ and then announcing a brand new tax was ‘not absolutely consistent’ – yes: he actually said this. Fair dinkum huh?
.

.
Lets have a memory remembrance. While Julia Gillard was still Prime Minister and when Kevin Rudd was Prime Minister, the ALP attempted to get each state to sign to the Better Schools funding agreement, Christopher Pyne and Tony Abbott were running around attempting to destroy this. They continued to attempt to destroy the system even after Abbott and Pyne said they would match the ALP. That they were on a ‘unity’ ticket.
.
Then just last week, they totally ditched the unity ticket. That instead of saying they would match funding to every school, they actually meant schools (plural as Abbott said on the Bolt Report). Well it was NOT plural. It was singular. And he sat there in an interview with Andrew Bolt on Sunday and totally lied. Fair dinkum huh?
.
Abbott and Pyne say that the ALP and in particular Bill Shorten “personally” took out $1.2 billion from the Better Schools fund. Really? You see when the states of Queensland and Western Australia and the Northern Territory refused to sign to the new agreement, guess what happens prior to an election? Any uncommitted funds are returned to consolidated revenue. This is basic accounting 101. Because those states and territory refused to accept the money and accept the conditions that came with that money, then it was uncommitted. Treasury, and not Shorten, placed the monies back into consolidated revenue. This was made quite clear when PEFO came out and yet Pyne made the outrageous claim that he ‘recently’ discovered this. What absolute rubbish Pyne. Fair dinkum huh?
.
And then today, Abbott and Pyne came out to face the press and announced they had signed a ‘in principle memorandum of understanding’ with the non signatory states. The joke here is Abbott and Pyne are claiming they have principles. But the bigger joke is there is no memorandum of understanding. That’s right. Nothing has been signed and no agreement was tabled in parliament. Remember that video above where Abbott tries to explain to Kerry O’Brien the difference between things he just says in the heat of the moment and ‘carefully scripted written down remarks’? Well there is nothing written here. And apparently, we the people are meant to accept what he and Pyne said today as ‘gospel truth’. Fair dinkum huh?
.
Further questioning of this ‘in principle agreement’ shows that the non signatory states are under no obligations to ensure that they do not reduce their own funding at all. And Pyne still pines for the SES system under the ‘Howard years’. Under this agreement, the ONLY schools that are guaranteed of federal funding are private and independent schools. Public schools get no such guarantees. Its why the school system has seen a disparity between private and public schools. And Pyne wants to return to this? He is actually planning to give $1.2bn to the non signatory states with NO GUARANTEES by the states to maintain and keep current funding levels or use them for schools at all. And he had the nerve to say HE (Pyne) was the person who introduced a national funding scheme. Fair dinkum huh?
.
The way Abbott and Pyne have handled this issue is a warning to us all. This coalition govt is not to be trusted. You cant make handshake agreements with any of these people. Nor can you come to ‘in principle’ agreements with them either. You need to see the writing on paper. You need to go through the fine print. You need to check, double check and triple check. Because they will attempt to weasel and squirm their way out of everything from introducing comments like ‘envelope’ and ‘quantum’ when they never used those words prior. From attempting to say we, the people, misheard them. Or the media was too stupid and didn’t understand. What still enrages me is Abbott continues to bullshit about wanting to be known as the infrastructure Prime Minister while destroying the most important infrastructure project this nation has ever had or will ever have this century; the NBN. Not to mention his bullshit climate change policy.
.
And Abbott tells us that he is fair dinkum? More like absolute bunkum.
.
bunkumsplash
