  1. Compulsory voting is only enforced in 10 countries in the world. Compulsory voting actually pushes voter turnouts down. Countries with the highest turnouts have voluntary voting. Countries with higher turnouts than us (our turnout is 81%) include Sweden, Denmark, Iceland and Malta. Australia has over 10% of non-registered voters and high levels of informal and donkey votes. We should be encouraged to vote with education and good ideas – not by threats of fines and ultimately the threat of violence.
