Lies, damned lies, and statistics

22/10/2010

Let’s play spot the aussie!

Statisically, Woodside is a funny little town. Predominately white and from predominately white countries of origin, yet a wide diversity of languages are spoken in the community.

Newspapers have reported that:

Critics and supporters of the plan gathered outside the building from before 6pm for the 6.30pm meeting carrying banners reading “no to refugees” and “lets offer welcome and support”.

Source: http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/news/south-australia/detention-centre-debate-begins/comments-e6frea83-1225941921115

What was not reported was there was a chant of ‘fuck off refugees’ coming from the pub across the road.

People do not seem to understand the consequences of the divisive language expressed on asylum seekers. It’s almost like they want this kind of reaction. Now they got it.

Ask yourself Australia:

  • Why is it that neither major party has a non white person as their immigration spokesperson?
  • Why was there anger by people in Ken Wyatt’s electorate who complained that they did not know he was white?
  • Why are you surprised by the reaction of Woodside residents when the only faces you see on your commercial television from this country are predominately white?
  • Why are surprised by your own Xenophobia?

The statistics that follow do not in any way seem to show this town is any different then your major cities. Scratch the surface and this is what you get.

I think its time to embrace your feelings Australia. It does not surprise me. I grew up here the only coloured face in a school photograph year after year. I understand your fear. I learned it first hand.

You are afraid that others may come into the country and take the jobs away from your offspring because your offspring are not all that intelligent.

Or they might feel intimidated by seeing other children having more than just vegemite sandwiches in their lunch box thereby highlighting your own lack of parenting skills.

I get that. I really really do.

You will not believe what I time I had when I was a kid. I deliberately had to appear stupid so as not to be beaten up by people who thought I was making them look bad.

Ha! Me making THEM look bad.

Seriously though…

You probably think I am angry. I am not. I’m actually relieved. I am glad that you guys are finally coming out of the closet!

After all the definition of Xenophobia is the irrational fear or hatred of foreigners or strangers or of that which is foreign or strange.

That’s right people! You are most likely suffering from a mentally illness.

Well not all of you. Or maybe more realistically, not all of you all of the time. Now I know some of you are going to jump up and down and call me a racist for this post. I assure you that is not the case.

Some of my best friends are white.

What can we do to demonstrate some good faith here. We understand that you were here first.

Oh I know! How about this. We promise to not treat you like you treated the Aborigines. That’s got to be a game winner right there!
