What have the Romans ever done for us?
If you listen to some media commentators and the coalition, the hung parliament we have is not getting anything done. Let’s check this.
1) Structural separation of Telstra.
This might not mean a lot to the average person, but it should. More on what it means here This has been on the drawing board since 1990! Yeah thats right. So how may Prime Ministers has it taken to finally get this done? Hawke, Keating, Howard and Rudd. 22 years!!! And between them none of them managed to get this done! Enter one female PM. Done in first parliamentary session.
2) Pricing Carbon.
This was a biggie. A real biggie. I am not going to talk about this too much. You all lived the debate and are living the reality. This is yet another policy that was first raised 17 years ago. And again a sequence of Prime Ministers in the past struggled to get anything done. The interests against this have much money. Coal and mining interests must have grimaced when this passed. Not because they would have to pay the price. That is not the issue. The issue is other countries might get the same idea and follow Australia. Don’t believe me? Well look at…
3) Plain Packaging of Tobacco.
Again a landmark reform. And its a HUGE reform people. Within minutes of the High Court decion, the Guardian had it on their website. Why you may ask? Because the UK is wanting to do what Australia had the balls to do. As are New Zealand, Norway, France, and yes, states of the good old USA. This was a dramatic blow for Tobacco companies and may be the impetus for plain packaging of a poison right around the world.
And this was done by this Prime Minister and her team in less then 24 months. Add to this the MRRT, NDIS, NBN, GONSKI, the R18+ reforms for games (another 15 year bill), how can anyone tell me this government is not getting anything done.
Has this government had stumbles? You bet. Some huge! But look at the size of the mountains it is scaling!!! And its not resting before it climbs the next one. When the Prime Minister says she will get something done, she means it.
